4. Integrated Learning & Unit Design

Developing an Integrated Unit of Work

The purpose of this session is for you to apply the learning and resources from previous sessions to develop an integrated unit of work for your school community and/or classroom in the area of ecological conversion and sustainability. Please take time to explore the videos and resources below. The allocated time for this session is two hours.

Your task is to create an integrated unit of work with the overall theme of sustainability and/or ecological conversion using the resources and learning from this course.

You may wish to use the ‘Understanding by Design’ unit template and integrate various subjects into your overall concept. An example has been included to guide your understanding.

The video below explains UbD in detail. The template emphasises a capabilities approach to curriculum design with consideration to differentiated practices. The second video briefly unpacks integrated learning and will support your writing of this unit.

If another colleague from your school is enrolled into this course you have the choice to complete this unit of work together. An alternative option to a unit plan is to create a staff or student reflection day or if you have any other ideas please feel free to contact me.

Videos

In the first video, you will hear from Grant Wiggins as he briefly explains the Understanding By Design approach to curriculum mapping.

In the second video, you will also see an example of an effective integrated learning approach at High Tech High School.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) Curriculum Planning Resources

Curriculum mapping identifies the extent of curriculum coverage in units of work and clearly links teaching, learning and assessment while working with the curriculum continuum. Mapping templates support teachers to identify where content descriptions and achievement standards are being explicitly addressed within the school’s teaching and learning program.

An annotated example is provided to assist teachers in visualising how the template could be completed. Please refer here:
